Welie.com brings you a very good resource called, Patterns in Interaction Design. The website lists many patterns that are found within Web Design, GUI (Graphical User Interface) Design, and MobileUI (Mobile User Interface) Design. All of which have been very helpful to me in the past.

The reason why viewing patterns in design is so important is because people understand the designs used in the patterns. For example, take a look at the following patterns in design from Welie.com.

The list can go on and on. When looking at these patterns, you can see that many major websites keep the same principle in mind when designing. Why? Because that is what people are used to and understand. It is what your visitors will want. Anything different from the patterns of design may confuse your visitor causing he/she to leave your website.
