An excellent article has been published recently called, “On Having Layout.”

A lot of Internet Explorer’s rendering inconsistencies can be fixed with giving an element “layout”. John Gallant and Holly Bergevin classified them as “dimensional bugs”. This leads to that question why this can change the rendering and the relation of elements, and that question, albeit a good one, is hard to answer.
