Just looking at ePlatform for a school paper I am working on and finding that website is still inactive. Too bad, seemed like a cool concept, but the world may not be ready for it yet.

I posted about ePlatform back in August and emailed them about the service and never heard anything. I just emailed them again and received this message, causing me to doubt if they're ever going to come out:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

     info@eplatform.com

Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 9): 501 Incorrect receipient address !!!

Wow, really? You emailed and got a failure message? Hm. But yeah... I agree. I would need a good way to backup everything. I too would feel uncomfortable placing all my information on a web service.

Great points everyone. Thanks for commenting :)

I lean the other way when it comes to online storage. I store nearly all my data offsite, though I do keep a backup on my own file server. I am much more comfortable with it being "out there" on a secured server, than on my personal PC that can be stolen or destroyed any time. If we were to go to a strictly online enviroment, I would have to store in one location and back up in another, to prevent loss.

I attempted to email ePlatform to ask questions concerning security, but I got a failure notice.

Great idea, but I doubt it would ever come to fruition, not THAT fully functional, anyway.

I agree that trusting one's entire life (or at least one's entire life's data) to an online entity is a scary proposition. It took me long enough even to trust GMail's archive.

I think the best answer is, as Brian mentions, an export feature? Imagine if ePlatform were to release a parallel, desktop version of its suite that synced automatically with the online version. Sort of like Groupwise but fully-featured, or Quicken but functional.

Thanks for the comment, Will. I agree with you. As for security, I don't like to store financial information on anything other than a secured desktop app or in my own financial system. But like you said, the thing that would bug me the most is if I were to do all this work online, as you said, and then loose it.

I wonder if they have some import/export backup system? Maybe something to export certain documents into well known applications. For example, for the address book, we can import from Outlook. But can we export back into Outlook as well?

Thanks, Will. Good points.

Do we want to store all our info online?

For me there are two reasons why the answer is probably no. First, security. I certainly don't want financial data, password data, or other important personal info stored in an environment unless it is totally secure.

Second (and strangely perhaps more importantly), I don't want to lose all my hard work of organizing my life on-line if the service is cancelled or goes bankrupt.

Thus, I would only use a well established, successful service to replace hard drive storage.

Regards
