Sleep is something that has been decreasing in time for me lately. This is a bad thing and I wanted to see if there was anything that I can do. I opened Google and searched for some sleeping tips and came across this great listing of tips: “How To Get a Better Night’s Sleep.” This is exactly what I was looking for.

How To Get a Better Night’s Sleep” gives the following tips:

  • Talk to your doctor.
  • Make and stick to a sleep schedule.
  • Adjust your sleep schedule as needed.
  • Learn relaxation and breathing exercises.
  • Create a bedtime ritual.
  • Eliminate caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
  • Create a comfortable sleep environment.
  • Use your bed for sleep (and sex) only.
  • Exercise.
  • When you can’t sleep, don’t stay in bed.
  • When you’ve had trouble sleeping, stick to your sleep schedule.
  • Keep communicating with your health provider(s).

My few thoughts about a couple of these:

First, “Use your bed for sleep (and sex) only,” was a little unexpected. The article discusses how you should remove your Television and your Telephone. That is reasonable, but I do not think I would ever go that far to get my sleep. Also, I feel that the “(and sex)” statement was not needed and kind of disturbed me as I read the article.

“When you can’t sleep, don’t stay in bed.”

“Don’t toss and turn. Get out of bed and do something relaxing (avoid stimulating activities like going online) until you feel drowsy.”

That makes a lot of sense and I can’t believe I have not tried that before. There are a lot of nights that I just toss and turn and never get any progress with my sleep. I know that when I am beginning to get tired, watching TV, listening to my teacher (shh), I begin to get very tired and sometimes fall asleep. I did not think about trying these activities when actually trying to go to bed.

“Eliminate caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.” Please not my coffee!

I hope these tips workout and I also hope that you all reading this will benefit as well. I know that sleeping is a big deal when it comes to performance and health and is definitely something that we should ignore to improve on. With that said, Goodnight, it is passed my bed-time! :)
